Located at 616 Big Bear Blvd. in Columbia, Missouri, the Central Missouri Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1943 to prevent cruelty to and alleviate suffering of all animals. We are committed to responsible pet ownership and elevating the welfare of all animals through our adoption, education, and intervention programs.
Low Cost Clinic – March 13th!
Is it time for your pets yearly vaccinations? Are they due for a nail trim? Do they need a micro-chip? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then stop on by the Humane Society on March 13th from 8am-11:30am. Vaccinations are $10 each, a nail trim is $5 and micro-chips are only $25!! You can also sign your animals up for low cost spay/neuter surgeries at the clinic too (no surgeries will be preformed that day, so your animals don’t need to tag along unless they are getting other procedures done at the clinic!)

CMHS “Cat”-astrophe!
The Central Missouri Humane Society needs your help. We currently have over 100 cats looking for their fur-ever homes, with more coming in every day!!! Our sweet and spunky feline friends deserve more than to be strays and shelter cats. To help increase our cat adoptions, we have temporarily lowered thier adoption rates. It’s only $50 to adopt one and an additional $25 if you adopt a second!
Also, this is just another example of why spaying and neutering is so important!! Barn cats, Mousers, strays, feral cats… they need to be spayed/neutered too! Remember to call and schedule those apointments! We offer a “barnyard special” for 3 or more animals!
Why Adopt from the Central Missouri Humane Society?
Here at CMHS we have LOTS of wonderful animals up for adoption. We strongly suggest you check us out first when looking to adopt, and there are several reasons why:
- Missouri unfortunately holds the title of the puppy mill capital of the nation. There are over 1,500 known puppy mills in our state! That is 3 times more than the next highest ranking state! Click here to view the state by state map of commercial breeders throughout the nation
- According to data from the Humane Society of the United States, 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized every year because there are more animals than loving homes for them.
- We are sadly forced to euthanize animals here at our shelter due to the high volume of animals that we take in. If you purchase animals from pet stores or other locations that is one more homeless animal at our shelter that doesn’t get a home.
- If it is a purebred you are looking for, we have plenty. About 25% of our animals are purebred ranging from Chihuahua to Great Dane!
- Animals from CMHS are fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated for temperament, so you have a background on the animal before you adopt it.
Thank you for your consideration. We can’t wait to see you at the Central Missouri Humane Society, where we love putting pets with people!
Central Missouri Humane Society statement on “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act” Proposed Statute, 2010-085, Version 1, Relating to Dog Breeders:
The Central Missouri Humane Society Board of Directors supports the spirit and intent of the proposed statute called the “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.” Specifically we endorse the purpose of this bill which is “to prohibit cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills by requiring large-scale dog breeding operations to provide each dog under their care with basic food and water, adequate shelter from the elements, necessary veterinary care, adequate space to turn around and stretch his or her limbs, and regular exercise.”
The Central Missouri Humane Society often has to address the adverse impact of unregulated large-scale puppy mill operations when malnourished and sick puppy mill dogs are relinquished to our shelter. Because of this and our advocacy for humane care for all dogs, we wholeheartedly support the spirit of this initiative to ensure that dogs in the puppy mills are given humane treatment.
