CMHS Friends
CMHS Friends for the Animals (CFA) will work to help the CMHS stabilize its financial situation through a variety of fundraising and events. CFA is a member-driven group governed by the Central Missouri Humane Society’s Board of Directors.

For 65 years, the CMHS has worked wonders with minimal resources, taking in thousands of animals each year and finding more than half of them wonderful homes. Many others are sent to other rescue groups and sanctuaries or returned to their owners. The CMHS provides low-cost veterinary services, supports an educational effort and operates a foster home network to provide temporary placements for animals awaiting their forever homes.
The CMHS is a private, not-for-profit organization. It is not affiliated with any national organization, nor is it an agency of the City of Columbia or Boone County. It was founded to help address the pet overpopulation problem in mid-Missouri. It is the region’s largest open-door shelter, which means it never turns an animal away, regardless of age, health, temperament or adoptability. It takes the animals no one else wants and makes the best decision possible for each one. Sometimes, that means humanely letting the animal go. It is back-breaking and heart-breaking work, but it must be done.
The CMHS is supported by adoptions, veterinary services and fund-raising efforts. The shelter receives $100,000 from the City of Columbia for support of Animal Control, including providing veterinary services, housing and adoption services for animals AC brings to the facility. The CMHS receives no tax dollars through subsidies from any governmental agency. The CMHS is a totally self-supporting organization.
Without the shelter and its life-saving services, mid-Missouri would experience a huge public health and public safety problem. Without the shelter, thousands of animals would be abandoned in our communities, entering our neighborhoods, spreading illness, creating more litters of animals and often meeting horrible ends through illness or from predators.
Central Missouri can do better than this. Central Missouri must do better than this. In the next year, the CMHS Friends for Animals will work to help the CMHS stabilize its financial situation through a variety of fund-raising efforts.
